Not everyone is impacting this environment equally.                                   Not everyone will be affected equally.

Women often suffer the most from the growing population and changing environment. When husbands are working outside the village, women are responsible for family planning: taking care of children, farming, collecting firewood and fetching water. We need to give women the tools they need and help them solve the problem of reproduction, food and water. Women are already struggling for everything but climate change just makes their life harder.

Dr. Jason Hall-Spencer’s research suggests that there will be a 30% loss in marine diversity this century due to ocean acidification. Jonathan Amos reports in his article “’Jacuzzi Vents’ Model CO2 Future” that oceans have absorbed more than a third of the CO2 in the past 200 years and their pH value is lowered by 0.1. Moreover, the IPCC predicts that their pH value may fall up to 0.4 by the end of the century if CO2 emissions are not taken under control.

Do we know how climate change affects the stabilization of microbial bodies? Do we understand plant decomposition? Or, do we know where and how to find humic substances in the soil? Laura Dane will introduce her research and lab work to answer these questions.

Dane is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy & Management at UC Berkeley. Her field of study is to look at how microbial bodies themselves become stabilized in soil and how climate change affects that stabilization. Let’s start with Carbon Stabilization and Soil Storage.

Small pacific islands such as Tokelau may become one of the first countries that will be submerged in the next few decades if people do not help to slow down climate change. Many group leaders, Foreign Ministers and Environmental Ministers of Fiji, El Salvador and Dominica are appealing for allies in 2011 Durban Climate Change Conference.
